Captain Herbert Fox Rommel
US Navy Retired
Now lives alone in Newport Rhode Island he is 85 years young.
His wife of 55 years has recently passed.
I flew Southwest Airlines to Providence Rhode Island, and rented a car and drove down to spend the afternoon with this Naval Hero.
His home at one time in the 1700's was a tavern.

Capt. Rommel at his home today on Bridge Street

I asked his opinion of the recent film
Walt Disney's "Pearl Harbor"
He saw it and said
"It was as queer as a three dollar bill."
(Warning..........If you ask him for his opinion get ready because he doesn't pull any punches..........
He has a very keen mind with a delightful sense of humor. )
But he did agree the best thing was that it put this War before a new generation of young people.
We spent the afternoon reminiscing about his colorful career in the United States Navy.
He is a very open and responsive to ideas.
He is a true American Patriot.
The Navy misses commanders of his caliber.
God don't make them any better, and that's a fact.
We drove over to the New York Yacht club for dinner, as we drove Capt. Rommel gave me a guided tour of Newport and pointed out the place where our Declaration of Independence was first read. He showed me where President George Washington attended church, that was pretty neat.
Newport Rhode Island is very picturesque
