Joe Hydrusko was from New York, was in a Captain's gig picking up survivors in the water. He was coxswain that operated the Captain's gig.

He asked permission to take the gig and pickup survivors and he was going all around the harbor picking up people. He went where he thought people needed help.

Well he was passing the Oklahoma, he heard the tapping inside the hull. He went to a naval officer and contacted the Naval Yard workers and Julio Decastro took his crew and worked for over thirty-six hours without a break, trying to get us out, and that was while the explosions were still going on and the planes were strafing.
There was Petty Officer that knew the ship and he directed them where to cut into the hull.
